Palmetto Bugs vs Roaches: Is There a Difference?

Florida woods cockroach in Tallahassee FL, also known as stink roach or palmetto bug

Are you here because you’re trying to figure out if you have palmetto bugs? Or maybe you have cockroaches? It can be hard to tell the difference between them sometimes… and that’s because they’re the same thing. “Palmetto bug” typically refers to one of several types of roaches that are common in north Florida and south Georgia. So, the next time you’re looking at a bug and trying to decide if it’s a palmetto bug vs. cockroach, the answer is easy – yes to both.

In this article, we’ll talk about a few of the different kinds of cockroaches you’ll see in our region which are sometimes called palmetto bugs, and what you should do if you find them.

What Types of Roaches Are Considered Palmetto Bugs?

In our region of southern Georgia and Northern Florida, one type of roach is the most palmetto bug of them all. That’s the Florida woods cockroach also known as the stink roach or the Florida skunk roach.

The three types of roaches that are most often called “palmetto bugs” are:

  • Florida woods cockroach - Mostly found in Florida, “stink roaches” can also pop up in southern states’ coastal regions. They move slowly, live in damp and warm climates, and prefer outdoor habitats. They’re not likely to infest your home — but it’s not impossible. Also, as their name suggests, they emit a stinky spray when they’re scared.
  • American cockroach - The largest cockroach, they’re also sometimes called water bugs and may be found in crawl spaces, and the cracks or crevices of your porch. They’re not good for you — they’re known to spread Salmonella and bacteria throughout your home if the infestation gets bad enough.
  • Oriental cockroach - Another large cockroach species commonly found in southern homes, they follow food and moisture, so you might see them in your drains, bathrooms, and crawl spaces. They’re notoriously hard to get rid of, so if you see one, we recommend calling an experienced roach exterminator.

What Should You Do About Palmetto Bugs?

Well, as the old saying goes, if you see one there’s a good chance there are a hundred more (at least). But sometimes you won’t see them at all. You may encounter droppings, egg sacs, or a musty, oily odor. So the second you spot something suspicious, it’s time to act.

Because cockroaches are so treatment-resistant, you should really contact a home pest control expert. At Dixon Pest Services, we guarantee your peace of mind. In a cockroach infestation, you want pest control you can trust.
